Cleaning Up a QuickBooks File Before Year-End

The client had been entering some transactions throughout the year, but the bookkeeping file had not been consistently reviewed. There were uncategorized transactions, unreconciled accounts, and several items that required clarification.

Client

A small business using QuickBooks Online that required assistance organizing its accounting records before year-end.

The Situation

The client had been entering some transactions throughout the year, but the bookkeeping file had not been consistently reviewed.

There were uncategorized transactions, unreconciled accounts, and several items that required clarification.

The client wanted to provide cleaner records to their tax professional and avoid having to resolve a large number of questions at year-end.

What We Did

We reviewed the QuickBooks file and created a list of outstanding items before beginning the cleanup work.

The project included:

  • Reviewing uncategorized transactions

  • Identifying transactions requiring client clarification

  • Reconciling bank accounts

  • Reconciling credit card accounts

  • Reviewing duplicate transactions

  • Reviewing account balances

  • Organizing the chart of accounts

  • Preparing financial reports for review

We communicated with the client through a structured question list to keep the project organized.

The Outcome

The client's accounting records were significantly more organized and ready for review by their tax professional.

The client also established a regular bookkeeping process to help prevent the same issues from building up in future periods.
